BONGAREE APARTMENTS

Location: South Esplanade, Bongaree, Queensland

A boutique unit development of 11 units for a waterfront site on Bribie Island. All apartments are orientated towards both Pumistone Passage and the surrounding bush land.

 

The building is conceived as a kit of parts. A car parking level on the ground floor is constructed of sand coloured concrete and timber battens – seemingly growing out of the site – an abstraction of sand castles or pieces of driftwood. Only this abstracted element is highly efficient – mitigating flood levels and providing generous car spaces and storage areas.

 

Above the sand coloured base floats the apartment themselves. This form takes its cues from the local vernacular architecture of modernist beach houses. Unexpected materials used such as wall tiling and f.c. sheet are coupled with orthodox and efficient multi-residential construction to offer surprise and delight in this idyllic locale.
